The nest of the little eagles in Zemgale, which can be seen live, has been known since July 2017, when one new bird was found there. It is built in birch at a height of about 20 meters. Judging by the nest material, the nest was at least five years old (the lower parts had already partially decomposed).
An online camera system has been deployed at this location in the spring of 2018. Later, during the nesting season, a pair of little eagles stayed in the nest, but nesting did not begin. In 2019, the female laid one egg, but it did not hatch. In the spring of 2020, several eagles visited the nest, but no nesting took place. In 2021, the nesting was unsuccessful – the eagle pair’s egg was pecked by the spotted woodpecker. Finally, in 2022, successful nesting was observed in this nest – a pair of eagles managed to raise a baby.
Jānis Ķuze and Jānis Rudzītis placed the camera system at this nest, Valdis Lukyanovs and Įrts Strazdiņš have also helped in its maintenance.
The operation of the live broadcast camera at the nest of the little eagle is provided by the Latvian Nature Foundation, initially within the project “Ensuring the protection of the little eagle in Latvia” (LIFE AQPOM), which was financially supported by the LIFE+ program of the European Commission and co-financed by the administration of the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.
