About this Wildcam

The MEGA lab believes that science can improve everyone’s life on a daily basis. Learn more at www.themegalab.org and follow us on instagram @themegalab

The MEGA Lab ocean observatory hosts a live streaming camera and a smart buoy to monitor ocean temperatures and coral reef health in collaboration with Aqualink off the coast of Kona, Hawaii (https://aqualink.org/reefs/1006).

The site utilizes infrastructure at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) and we plan to continue developing advanced technologies to promote marine health. The system uses the Fathom Octopus camera (https://fathomocean.com) to provide 360 panning ability to optimize reef monitoring.

Check out the Timestamp document to see the days most exciting & interesting sightings, the rewind bar will go back as far as 12 hours: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/… Ask any questions about fish IDs, and we will try and answer as best as we can, just ensure you timestamp your queries using the clock in the top left corner HH/MM/SS Add more details for our citizen science database here: https://forms.gle/QcoiTisk6E51TUm39

The MEGA lab is redefining the way society experiences science by showing the world how surfers, skaters and artists are developing new technology that can save our planet while also giving it away to people who need it the most. MEGA specializes in the changing climate, ocean ecology and the molecular connections humans have with nature. MEGA Lab bridges disciplines and institutions to create more opportunities for students and citizens to engage in science. Dr. John Burns (Biologist at UH Hilo – Marine Science & Data Science), Dr. Haunani Kane (Geologist at UH Manoa – SOEST), and Dr. Cliff Kapono (Chemist at ASU – GDCS) lead projects throughout the globe and run a public lab in downtown Hilo at the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center. Come visit the lab in downtown Hilo to chat with scientists, explore immersive data products, and party for the planet!
