The camera provides an opportunity to look into the underwater life in the Līgatne river below the fish road, which was restored in the summer of 2020. The fishway in the Līgatne river is one of the rare constructions of its kind in Latvia, which ensures the migration of fish and other aquatic organisms over man-made river dams – sluices and hydroelectric power plants.
Salmon-like fish, which live permanently or during migration in the Līgatne river and other watercourses in Latvia, cannot overcome various types of dams during spawning in autumn and winter, some of which are built for obtaining electricity. In August 2020, in order to improve the fish spawning conditions of the Līgatne River, the Līgatne County Council restored the wooden construction fishway installed in 2013, so that salmon, brook trout, sea trout and alat could move to the spawning grounds in the upper reaches of the river, as these species are characterized by spawning migration. After the work was carried out, many migratory fish were observed already in the first spawning season, and a live underwater camera gives an insight into the process.
The Latvian Nature Foundation provides nature live broadcasts for the ninth year already, and in 2020 they had almost 4.2 million views worldwide. As with the transmissions from the bird’s nests, the operation of the underwater camera is ensured thanks to the LMT’s 4G connection.
The camera system was installed by Jānis Ķuze and Jānis Rudzītis, with the participation of Jānis Zilver, Gunaras Škēles and Māris Mitrēvics. The Latvian Nature Foundation thanks Līgatne County Council and especially Ainārs Štein, representatives of the company “Līgatne Komunālserviss” and others involved in the installation and provision of this live broadcast camera!
